Is the SSD compatible with your laptop?

What are the different SSD’s available?
We mentioned M.2 and 2.5-inch SATA above but those aren’t the only type available. Here’s a lowdown on the various types.
2.5-inch Serial ATA
This is the SSD you will find in most mid-range to high-end laptops and is very similar to standard HDD’s in terms of size and shape.
Plus, it also uses the exact same SATA Cables and the interface so even a first-timer should find it easy to attach it.
All you need to do is ensure your laptop has the slot for it. But in case the laptop allows for a 3.5-inch SSD, a bay adapter is all you need to install the 2.5-inch drive correctly.
This is the second most common SSDs and is usually found in cheaper laptops or slimmer design.
That is because these SSDs are the size of a RAM stick and take up hardly any room and yet provide you with speed and space.
Space for these types of SSDs are also available with desktop motherboards and some motherboards (both desktop and laptop) allow you 2 or more SSD slots allowing you to run the drives in RAID.
Also, 22mm Width and 80mm Length is the most common size of these SSDs. And while most laptops allow a fixed size, some desktops have special anchor points that let you fix drives of varied sizes.
The storage space with these drives can go up to 2TB so you have plenty of space for all your things.

Speed is one of the main benefits you can enjoy with these kinds of SSD drives as they run on the PCI express bus instead of SATA.
But if you are laptop user, well, you won’t be able to enjoy all that speed since these drives fit into empty PCIe x4 or x16 slot which are only available in desktops.
But these slots are also used for the high-end graphics card which means the drive can only be installed if there is an additional slot.
One of the reasons these drives are so fast is because they have additional breathing room which keeps it cool and allows for faster transfer of data without disruptions.
Very similar to the SATA drives but at the same time very different to them as well.
That is because these drives use different connectors and all data is transferred using the PCIe interface which makes them exceptionally fast.
Compared to M.2 drives, these are a lot thicker and also will cost you the more money as they offer way more capacity making them the ideal drives for servers with open drive bays.
So should I get an SSD with SATA to PCIe Interface?
To tell you the truth, there is no straightforward answer to this. As you already know, 25-inch drives run on SATA.
When it comes to M.2 drives, these can run on either of the two while the fastest of the drives support NVMe.
But that’s where the catch is as m.2 drives without NVMe can run on both SATA or PCIe whereas drives with NVMe support run on PCIe.
So how should you choose?
This comes down to your needs. If you are using the laptop for light tasks like browsing and movies, then you won’t feel the speed difference between an NVMe disk and SATA.
But you want to use your laptop for graphics-intensive tasks and have loads of files to store an NVMe drive becomes a must as they provide you 5x more bandwidth then SATA drives.
However, while NVMe drives are still more expensive, the prices have been catching up. This is why I would suggest you go for an NVMe drive irrespective if your laptop supports it.

What size should you opt for?
The size of the drive is associated with its cost so if you do not want to overspend, you should know exactly how much you need.
This is the least space an SSD can provide and also has lower memory modules which limit their speed.
So if you intend on buying one for gaming or serious professional work where you would be storing huge files these drives are a big no.
And in case you already have a laptop with a 128GB drive, I would recommend you get an upgrade which would cost you around Rs 2000 or more.
A better budget option than the 128GB drive but again not ideal for professionals or gamers as once again you would be cramped for space within a few of the latest titles of software and in need of an upgrade.
500GB is the least space you should go for considering you are using the laptop for entertainment purposes or starting out with your professional career and don’t yet have tons of large media files.
This drive maintains the perfect balance between money and space helping you the most value.
With a 1TB SSD, you will have space not just for games and media but for also installing the OS onto the drive without killing it.
If you have the budget and mean serious business, this space should serve you just right and is an SSD drive worth every penny.
Now, these SSDs are absolute beasts in terms of both space and speed but will also cost you a premium as their prices can go up to 1lack or more.
Currently, Samsung has a monopoly over these drives which limits the options you have.
TIP: If you are relying on your desktop for gaming and work, I would recommend you have multiple drives with space of 500GB to 1TB.
This will not only help you get tons of space at a lower cost but also give your desktop a much-needed speed boost without having to pay the mighty prices a 4TB SSD costs.
How much power does an SSD consume?
If you are using a desktop, I guess the power consumption is of little importance to do you especially if a fast performance is what you wanted, right?
But the same cannot be said for laptop users as power consumption has a huge impact on battery life. So what drive should you be buying?
