In-Depth SSD Reviews
#1: Samsung 860 EVO (Best SSD for Gaming)
Samsung needs no introduction. When it comes to tech whether you are buying a mobile, washing or an SSD, Samsung talks the talk and walks the walk with its amazing line of products.
Don’t believe it?
Here’s all you need to know about the EVO SSD.
- Sequential Read/Write speeds up to 550/520 MB/s respectively. Performance varies based on system hardware configuration
- SSD Capacity: 2TB , Cache: Samsung 2 GB Low Power DDR4 SDRAM
- Interface : SATA 6Gb/s, compatible with SATA 3Gb/s and SATA 1.5Gb/s interfaces
It is lightning fast
The first and foremost thing you expect with an SSD is speed, right?
Well, the EVO 860 delivers exactly that with a write speed of about 520 MB/s and sequential read speed around 550 MB/s.
Plus, the maximum data transfer speed has received a huge upgrade from 12GB to a whopping 78GB compared to the previous models.
So if you are a professional and work with tons of heavy media files, this is just the kind of SSD you need.
But how does it manage such high speeds?
Firstly, driving the SSD is a 64-layer V-NAND Technology which provides better speed and durability with its stacked cell structure.
Secondly, it is the MJX SATA Controller which in tandem with the special 2GB LPDDR4 DRAM (only available in 2TB models) gives you unprecedented speed and power efficiency.
That is because it does not use the CPU RAM for caching.
Also, making it perfect SSD for videos editors and gamers that need bucket loads of space for all their games or media is the 2TB storage space (are won’t run out of space with this one).
Power Efficiency and Endurance
You do not want your new SSD to suck into your laptop’s battery life and guess won’t, the EVO 860 does not do that either. But how?
Well, the 64-layer V-NAND Technology also makes this SSD 25%-30% more power efficient than the previous EVO models (so you still get a day’s worth of battery life).
And so you get your money’s worth, this technology gives you around 2400TBW (Terabytes Written). Confused?
In simpler terms, this is the total number of data that can be written into it before it fails which has been quadrupled compared to the older model.
That means this baby will last you for years to come without any trouble. If you want to get a deeper understanding of TBW, get to know more about it here.
Do you use a Linux system? No problem. With an improved Error Correction Code (ECC), MJX controller and an upgraded queued trim, the SSD can also be installed on a Linux system due to increased compatibility.
One small drawback with this SSD is its premium price tag as it can cost you over 35k. But with that much space, speed and endurance, it is well worth every rupee spent on it.
Also, some users have also had a hard time registering the product on the Samsung site and if you do too, do get in touch with the customer team to guide you through it.
#2: WD Blue WDS100T2B0A SSD
- High capacity with enhanced reliability and superior performance for high end computing
- Enhanced power efficiency, leading edge reliability and broad compatibility
- Downloadable WD SSD dashboard and Acronis software, 3 year limited warranty
If you do not want to spend so big or simply do not need that much amount of space, then the WD Blue WDS100T2B0A SSD is just what you need.
Endurance and Power Efficiency
If you are as clumsy as me then you will be happy to that even dropping the disk won’t corrupt your data unlike with an HDD.
That is because the disk has minimal moving parts so your data is almost at no risk (this bad boy can actually take a beating).
Further ensuring that is the 1.75 million hours MTTF (Mean Time to Failure) which is the total elapsed time before the SSD starts to fail.
Also, while it has a lower Terabyte Written count than the 860 EVO, 500TBW is still really high so your SSD can easily outlive most of the other laptop/desktop components.
Equipped with the 3D NAND Technology, the WD Drive delivers a 25% more energy efficient model over regular NAND SSDs so you do not have to charge your laptop constantly.
And as you already know, the advanced stacking system of 3D NAND technology also makes SSDs superfast.
Thus it comes as no surprise that the WD SSD boasts of a sequential read speeds of up to 560MB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 530MB/s.
And with those speeds, the SSD is ideal for all heavy tasks like gaming, video editing, programming. Not to forget, the laptop will also boot and load applications within seconds.
But what about data transfers?
Well, at 6GB/s you have all the speed you need in the world to transfer even the largest of files in minutes
The 1TB storage the SSD is also ideal for all professional work that has large media files required to be safely stored on a daily basis.
With the WD Dashboard, you get to track factors like the space available, temperature, smart attributes and other factors important to creating a seamless working environment (so you are in complete control, always).
And with the WD Acronis True Image software that is available for free, you can clone drives and backup all your important data with the click of a button.
After constant testing and trials, the SSD has been certified Integrity Testing Labs which means it is at par with expected compatibility standards.
So Whether you have a Mac, Windows or a UNIX laptop, the SSD comfortably runs on them all.
And lastly, also ensuring this is the upgraded error correction system.
But in case you still run into some error, WD’s s excellent support staff is there at your service and can be contacted via phone or you can also get in touch with experts through their community page.
To be really nitpicky, a 24*7 customer service would have been ideal.
Also, it is not as advanced as the Samsung 860 EVO as you get lower space and endurance.
But for a cost much lesser, the speed, power efficiency, and dashboard features are quite impressive.
#3: Kingston SSDNow A400 (Best 120GB SSD)
Did you know you could get an SSD for as low as around Rs 1500?
Yup, the Kingston SSDNow A400 gives you both, good speed and space at a much lower cost making it an ideal SSD for budget buyers.
- Fast start-up, loading and file transfers
- More reliable and durable than a hard drive, Storage temperature: -40°C~85°C
- Multiple capacities with space for applications or a hard drive replacement
One of the reasons why the SSD is so cheap is because it is a TCL (Triple Cell Level) SSD.
And while these SSDs have drawbacks (that we’ll cover below), they are a good blend of pocket-friendly yet durable and speedy SSDs
The 120GB space makes it the ideal boot drive where you can install your operating system and some of your most important software.
This will give you faster boot times and ensure your software loads up quickly and runs smoother than it did on the HDD.
Though keep in mind, this system only works if you have the slot run both an SSD and a 500GB or higher HDD.
At the price point, a sequential read speed of 500MB/s and write speed of 450MB/s is everything you could have asked for.
Endurance and Compatibility
Also, the SSD has a rugged exterior. This makes it both shock and vibration-resistant giving you excellent durability as it can withstand the daily bumps and falls like a rock.
Plus, it also has fewer moving parts. So while dropping an HDD might result in all your stored data corrupting all of your precious data, it is not the case with an SSD
Lastly, its 7mm form factor makes it a very versatile unit as it easily fits even into sleeker notebooks and desktops.
On the downsides, the A400 lacks the speed, space and endurance other higher SSDs provides which limits its use as it can only be used to install OS and very few applications.
It is also not compatible with all operating systems so if you use a Mac or Linux, you will have to look elsewhere.
Alternate Pick: WD WDS120G2G0A
If you have a few extra bucks to spare and would like something a little faster and more advanced, the WD WDS120G2G0A is perfect.
- Improved performance for everyday computing
- An easy upgrade for your PC
- Solid state reliability
And one of the reasons for that is because you can enjoy most of the benefits you get with the WD Blue WDS100T2B0A SSD.
So that means you get access to the dashboard for SSD details like temperature, etc. and also the WD Acronis True Image software for easy cloning and backup of files.
It also gives you better transfer speeds up to 545MB/s and is compatible with Linux and Mac, unlike the Kingston A400.
These features make this SSD another value for money buy that you will not regret especially if you are looking for an SSD to work in tandem with your HDD.
How to Buy the Right SSD?
Below are all the questions you should be asking yourself before you purchase an SSD for any laptop.
Is the SSD compatible with your laptop?
If you have just purchased one of the best gaming laptops in India, you will be happy to know that these laptops are compatible with almost every SSD you will find.
This is because they have a high-end motherboard. But if you go with a laptop under 30k like the HP 15, these usually come with an M.2 slot rather than the traditional 2.5-inch (SATA) slot.
Keep in mind that, some of the laptops have the SSD attached directly to the motherboard in which case an upgrade is not possible. So make sure you know every detail before buying (and thanks to our reviews, you will).
What are the different SSD’s available?
We mentioned M.2 and 2.5-inch SATA above but those aren’t the only type available. Here’s a lowdown on the various types.
2.5-inch Serial ATA
This is the SSD you will find in most mid-range to high-end laptops and is very similar to standard HDD’s in terms of size and shape.
Plus, it also uses the exact same SATA Cables and the interface so even a first-timer should find it easy to attach it.
All you need to do is ensure your laptop has the slot for it. But in case the laptop allows for a 3.5-inch SSD, a bay adapter is all you need to install the 2.5-inch drive correctly.
This is the second most common SSDs and is usually found in cheaper laptops or slimmer design.
That is because these SSDs are the size of a RAM stick and take up hardly any room and yet provide you with speed and space.
Space for these types of SSDs are also available with desktop motherboards and some motherboards (both desktop and laptop) allow you 2 or more SSD slots allowing you to run the drives in RAID.
Also, 22mm Width and 80mm Length is the most common size of these SSDs. And while most laptops allow a fixed size, some desktops have special anchor points that let you fix drives of varied sizes.
The storage space with these drives can go up to 2TB so you have plenty of space for all your things.
SSD AIC (Add in Card)
Speed is one of the main benefits you can enjoy with these kinds of SSD drives as they run on the PCI express bus instead of SATA.
But if you are laptop user, well, you won’t be able to enjoy all that speed since these drives fit into empty PCIe x4 or x16 slot which are only available in desktops.
But these slots are also used for the high-end graphics card which means the drive can only be installed if there is an additional slot.
One of the reasons these drives are so fast is because they have additional breathing room which keeps it cool and allows for faster transfer of data without disruptions.
Very similar to the SATA drives but at the same time very different to them as well.
That is because these drives use different connectors and all data is transferred using the PCIe interface which makes them exceptionally fast.
Compared to M.2 drives, these are a lot thicker and also will cost you the more money as they offer way more capacity making them the ideal drives for servers with open drive bays.
So should I get an SSD with SATA to PCIe Interface?
To tell you the truth, there is no straightforward answer to this. As you already know, 25-inch drives run on SATA.
When it comes to M.2 drives, these can run on either of the two while the fastest of the drives support NVMe.
But that’s where the catch is as m.2 drives without NVMe can run on both SATA or PCIe whereas drives with NVMe support run on PCIe.
So how should you choose?
This comes down to your needs. If you are using the laptop for light tasks like browsing and movies, then you won’t feel the speed difference between an NVMe disk and SATA.
But you want to use your laptop for graphics-intensive tasks and have loads of files to store an NVMe drive becomes a must as they provide you 5x more bandwidth then SATA drives.
However, while NVMe drives are still more expensive, the prices have been catching up. This is why I would suggest you go for an NVMe drive irrespective if your laptop supports it.
All the details regarding that will be available on the manual so make sure to check it out before buying.
What size should you opt for?
The size of the drive is associated with its cost so if you do not want to overspend, you should know exactly how much you need.
This is the least space an SSD can provide and also has lower memory modules which limit their speed.
So if you intend on buying one for gaming or serious professional work where you would be storing huge files these drives are a big no.
And in case you already have a laptop with a 128GB drive, I would recommend you get an upgrade which would cost you around Rs 2000 or more.
A better budget option than the 128GB drive but again not ideal for professionals or gamers as once again you would be cramped for space within a few of the latest titles of software and in need of an upgrade.
500GB is the least space you should go for considering you are using the laptop for entertainment purposes or starting out with your professional career and don’t yet have tons of large media files.
This drive maintains the perfect balance between money and space helping you the most value.
With a 1TB SSD, you will have space not just for games and media but for also installing the OS onto the drive without killing it.
If you have the budget and mean serious business, this space should serve you just right and is an SSD drive worth every penny.
Now, these SSDs are absolute beasts in terms of both space and speed but will also cost you a premium as their prices can go up to 1lack or more.
Currently, Samsung has a monopoly over these drives which limits the options you have.
TIP: If you are relying on your desktop for gaming and work, I would recommend you have multiple drives with space of 500GB to 1TB.
This will not only help you get tons of space at a lower cost but also give your desktop a much-needed speed boost without having to pay the mighty prices a 4TB SSD costs.
How much power does an SSD consume?
If you are using a desktop, I guess the power consumption is of little importance to do you especially if a fast performance is what you wanted, right?
But the same cannot be said for laptop users as power consumption has a huge impact on battery life. So what drive should you be buying?
A drive like the Samsung 850 EVO is one of the most energy efficient drives and can give you about 2 hours of additional run-time.
On a general note, the more the spacious the drive, the more battery life they draw due to the larger number of NAND packages.
As you can see, buying an SSD is not as easy as it may sound. There are tons of features and specs you need to know about in order to make a purchase that suits both your needs and pocket.
And we are sure that with this buyer’s guide, you should have absolutely no trouble finding the perfect SSD for your laptop or desktop.
