In-Depth Smartwatch Reviews
#1: Samsung Galaxy Watch
The Samsung Galaxy Watch is the ultimate combination of both style and utility. Here’s what you should know about this feature-rich smartwatch.
- Circular design and Vintage textured body with scratch resistant Gorilla glass DX+
- Swim ready - water resistant up to 50 m (5 ATM)
- Samsung Health app
Whether you prefer to row, walk, run, squat, use the treadmill, elliptical, cycle to the nearby hills, etc. the Galaxy can automatically track 6 activities without pressing a button (and up to 40 in total).
If you sync it with the S Health App, you can get detailed reports that include, number steps, speed, reps, stride, distance, calories burned, etc. depending on the workout. Reports, that can be used to track your workout routine over weeks or months and make changes for even better results.
And if you are new to working out, the watch will even provide you step by step guides on how to do squats, crunches, along with details like reps, duration and so on (it is like a personal trainer on your wrist)
Furthermore, it will also keep track of your heart rate, stress levels and sleep during the day and create a log of the 4 stages of sleep.
And if it senses an issue with sleep it recommends changes you can make or if you are too stressed out, it provides guided breathing as well (and now it is your Yoga Guru as well).
More than just a Fitness Tracker
Not just tracking your fitness, the watch also allows you to download and use over 10,000 apps from Gear App Store. So whether you wanted to book a cab through Uber, Ola or use Spotify, calculator, etc. you can now do it via your watch.
If you are using Bluetooth headsets, you don’t even need your mobile any more for songs. It allows you to stream music or listen to songs directly from the watch as it has an internal 4GB memory to jazz up your workouts and long metro rides.
You can also turn up/down the volume in a jiffy by simply rotating the bezel. The bezel can also help turn off annoying early morning alarms easily, browse apps, emails, and adjust brightness.
And if for some reason you are unable to take a call via your mobile, you can choose to answer/reject calls with a simple rotation
If you do choose to answer or want to check your voicemail, its mic and speaker let you do it without having to connect your earphones (running, walking or stuck in a crowded place, you will never miss an important call again).
But that’s not it
It also eliminates the need for you to carry your debit/credit cards or wallet as it supports MST (Magnetic Secure Transmission) and NFC.
All you need to is take it close to the card swipe machine and voila, your payment will be made instantly (shopping just got a whole lot easier and quicker).
Oh and not to forget, you do not have to be fidgeting with the watch to set reminders, alarms, etc. as it has a voice assistant named Bixby that will have all done for you.
The Perfect Travel Partner
It can correctly measure the air pressure, height, and speed so if you are into trekking, mountain climbing or cycling, this becomes your Altimeter, Barometer or Speedometer as well.
And when you are on those roads untraveled, its GPS system ensures you never get lost and also know exactly where you can find a good restaurant or place to stay (while your smartphone remains tucked away safely in the pocket or backpack).
But in case you ever do encounter trouble, just tap the home button thrice and you an SOS along with your location will be sent to your selected contact in seconds.
It also has an IP68 rating which means it can resist dust and water up to 1.5-meters for 30-minutes so you do no to remove it in case of rain (do not take it swimming or diving though).
This smartwatch isn’t just loaded with features, it is designed to impress as well (compliments coming your way in 3,2,1).
You can also choose any of the 15 pre-loaded faces to best match your style. So whether you wanted to go retro, digital or urban, it is just a bezel turn away.
Similarly, you can also switch straps (go for the Arik Levy ones to add some zing and colors to your style).
The 1.3-inch Super AMOLED display is crystal clear making it easy to navigate around even in bright sunlight. Plus, it is made out of Gorilla glass DX+ which means it won’t break or scratch easily and can take a slight beating
The bezel that will do so much of your work, is built using stainless steel to give it a premium look and long-lasting durability so smartwatch lasts you for years.
Even with heavy usage, the battery will easily last you 2-3 days and when it needs to be charged it does not take more than an hour or two.
Well, I am going to be a little nitpicky here. If you are not using a Samsung phone, you will need extra apps to make the most of your new smartwatch.
And while some of you might think it is expensive, trust me, with all those sexy features and design, it is a bargain (DO NOT MISS OUT ON THIS).
#2: Samsung Galaxy S3 Frontier (A Cheaper Alternate)
- 1.3-inch 360x360 Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display
- Corning Gorilla Glass SR+
- Galaxy wearable app
You can alternatively also go with the SAMSUNG Gear S3 Frontier. While it is a slightly older model, it comes with most almost the same features though there are a few upgrades on the Galaxy in terms of design and performance.
The Galaxy is available in 42mm and 46mm whereas the Frontier is available in just 46mm which can be bigger for some users. There are also more colors and straps to choose from.
In terms of performance and build, the Frontier uses the Corning® Gorilla Glass SR+ glass while the Galaxy watch features the Corning Gorilla® DX+ glass which a tad better.
The Galaxy also uses the Exynos 9110 Dual core 1.15GHz and a 1.5GB RAM which is an upgrade over the Exynos 7270, Dual 1.0GHz and 768MB RAM of the Frontier.
This means the Galaxy has that little speed boost I am sure many users will appreciate.
Lastly, the 472mAH battery of the Galaxy gives you a better battery life when compared to the 380mAH battery of the Frontier.
But considering that the Frontier is available for about 18-20k (you save almost 10k) and goes toe to toe in terms of build, fitness tracking and other features, the upgrades do not particularly kill the Frontier.
And thus the Frontier is still a worthy purchase so make sure you check it out before making a final decision.
#3: Apple Watch Series 4
If you are already using Apple products like the iPhone, MacBook and Ear Pods, then the Apple Watch Series 4 is an obvious choice. More about it below.
- GPS + Cellular
- Optical heart sensor
- Digital Crown
The perfect workout partner
Are you preparing for a marathon, a triathlon or do simply just love to cycle or run early morning?
Either way, with all the important metric you will need right at your wrists, the Apple isn’t just your watch but also the trainer you need.
More so for runners, since it includes features tailor-made for them like pace alerts (just a tap away), cadence (steps per minute) and rolling pace.
And if you are using equipment like the treadmill, stair or elliptical that is compatible with the watch, you can sync it to get real-time updates about your heart rate, calories, and speed.
It also has an automatic workout detection feature where anytime it detects you running or jogging it will send you alerts to open the workout app and alerts to end workouts (just in case you get distracted before cooling down).
To keep you motivated through all your backbreaking workout you can setup up 7-day competition with friends where you are alerted each time he/she surpasses you.
And even awards winners with trophies (here’s your chance to get some bragging right over them). But if not that, the one thing that definitely keeps me on top my game is good music.
With the watch, you can stream music from any of you the popular apps like Gaana, Wynk, etc. or even listen to an Apple Podcast episode while on the run.
But what if you are not a fitness freak?
Even then the Apple Watch can play an important role in maintaining overall health by tracking your heart rate all day long and informing you of high/low heart rate.
With all these alerts you can consult your doctor and have any underlying issue detected well in time (as they say, a stitch in time saves nine).
Furthermore, with its accelerometer and gyroscope, it can detect a hard fall and alerts you to call emergency services with the touch of a button.
And if the notification isn’t dismissed after 60-seconds the call is made automatically along with alerts of your location to your emergency contacts.
You can also send an SOS alert in seconds where it will notify your emergency contacts of your location (just the kind of feature a woman needs during late her night travels).
If you feel too stressed out, you can also follow a series of guided breathing techniques using the Breath App.
It will also send you tips for a healthy diet and sleep, remind you to climb stairs, drink water and so on to ensure you remain your healthy best for a long, long time.
Hate to carry your mobile while running? So do I and now you do not have to either. The Cellular feature of the Apple Watch allows you to take calls directly using the smartwatch while your mobile sits at your desk.
And if your friend has Apple watch as well, you don’t even need to call or text. Just press Talk and your smartwatch turn into a Walkie-Talkie.
Also, like with all Apple products, even here Siri is at your service whenever needed and all you need to is raise your wrist to get in touch with her for weather reports, scores, etc.
You also do not need your mobile for navigating through treks or while driving as the watch has an accurate GPS system (so you never ever lose your way even if you forgot your phone).
Build and Design
This Apple is a complete game changer as it comes with a curved display that is larger than previous models for a more immersive experience.
And Apple has done that without compromising on battery life and making it heavier or bulkier and thus perfect for all arm sizes (and obviously, the strap is adjustable).
The increase in size has also created room for a larger speaker which means you get 50% more sound than before so you hear this better even from a distance
The upgrade to the S4 processor chip also makes the Series 4 almost twice as fast as the Series 3 or 2.
And just like with the Samsung Galaxy, hereto, you can adjust the face and bands. Plus, the watch also acts like a barometer, altimeter, and speedometer.
The big advantage this watch has over the Samsung Galaxy is that it is water-resistant up to 50m. So while you cannot take Galaxy for a swim, this baby should have no trouble tracking your pool and open-water workouts like a boss.
And in case you find all the water clogging up the speaker, just turn the digital crown which will remove all the water with a burst of loud noise so you can once again here everything loud and clear.
One of the few drawbacks here is that this watch is more suited to Apple users than Android users as syncs up quite perfectly with an iPhone.
Also, you will have pay around 50k-80k depending on your choice of color and design to have this piece of genius around your wrist.
Alternatively, you can also go for the Apple Watch Series 4 that comes without the Cellular feature. Yes, you cannot make calls directly but will cost you lesser.
#4: Apple Watch Series 3
- Optical heart sensor
- Digital Crown
If you are looking for a cheaper Apple Watch, the Series 3 by no means it done and dusted and still makes for a pretty good buy if prefer Apple phones and Ear Pods especially since it isn’t very different to the Apple Series 4.
The only major differences between the two are the processor and screen size. The Apple Series 4 comes equipped with the S4 processor chip which faster than the S3 Chip of the Apple Series 3.
This means it delivers better performance especially if you run multiple apps at once.
Next up, the Series 4 has a screen size of 977 sq mm display area compared to the 740 sq mm display area of the Series 3 so you get more viewing area without compromising much on weight or battery life.
Apart from that, the Series 3 does not come with a fall detection which can be a real lifesaver in case of an emergency as it automatically detects if you have fallen and informs emergency services and contacts of your location.
Another life-saving difference between the two is an ECG App (electrical heart sensor) which the Series 4 should be receiving towards the end of 2019.
Lastly, the Series 4 has an upgraded Second-generation optical heart sensor for more detailed reports about the heart and a digital crown with haptic feedback to ensure you never miss out on an incoming call, message, etc.
But considering the Series 3 is also water-resistant, gives the same battery life and has most of the excellent features the Series 4 offers to travelers, workout freaks and for general health, at less than 30k I would still call the Series 3 a steal.
There is also a Cellular variant of it that gives you the comfort to make calls without your mobile but it will cost you about 10k-12k more.
