In-Depth Sewing Machine Reviews for Indians
#1: Computerized Brother FS101 Sewing Machine
Whether you are buying your first sewing machine as a beginner or looking for an upgrade, it hardly gets any better than the Computerized Brother FS101. Wondering why?
Then let’s get to it.
- Item weight: 6.96 kg. Package dimensions: 48.4 x 40.2 x 27.4 cm
- 100 Stitch number and 55 alphanumeric stitches
- Number of buttonholes - 8
Stitching at its easiest
One of the reasons why stitching is so easy with the with Brother FS101 is because setting it up is so damn easy (you can do it in under 5-minutes).
All you need to do is choose any of the in-built 100 stitches or the 55 alphanumeric stitches by entering the code and the machine will automatically set the stitch length and width.
The 100 stitches include the zigzag, cross, slip stitches so you can create pretty much any design you want to.
While the alphanumeric stitches are ideal for monogramming or stitching on names, numbers on special requests
With the in-built threader, the otherwise frustrating task of getting it into the needle eye now takes you seconds and to cut off the excess, you can find a cutter on the machine itself.
And since you get a clear view of the bobbin, you are never left guessing as to when the thread is emptying out.
Also creating button holes is easier than ever as it can create 8 buttonholes within seconds (no more twisting and flipping of the fabric needed anymore)
Once you are done with the setup, to get it up and running you use the foot pedal. But if you are in the mood to workout those glutes, the on/off button gets the trick done.
Furthermore, there are 3-speed controls which give you utmost control over the stitching and noise (getting the perfect stitch does not get any more effortless).
Even though it is packed with tons of features, it remains highly portable and compact. It weighs just about 7kgs and will fit into the smallest of cupboard compartments with ease.
But if you do not want to put it away?
Well, the dust cover ensures your sewing machine looks just as good as new and no dirt or dust interfere with the stitching.
Are you stitching something special for your daughter’s/son’s upcoming birthday? Or is it an urgent customer request?
Thanks to the LED light you can put in extra hours at night without any disturbance. Plus, at the lowest speed, you won’t even hear it (yup, it is that silent).
Also, the LED will last you the entire life of the machine (which by the way is quite a few years) saving you on any overhead expenses
The large backlit display gives you all the details you want regarding the stitch while the buttons are quite responsive and easy to use.
And if you haven’t used a computerized sewing machine before, no worries, the demo CD and manual contain all the tutorials and info you need to kick-start your new hobby/business.
Well, there isn’t much to fault about the sewing machine except its high price tag as it can cost you well over 15k.
But if convenient and quick stitching is a priority for you, the Brother FS101 is the ultimate beast (you do not want to miss out on this).
#2: Usha Janome Wonder Stitch (Best Sewing Machine in India under 15,000)
Usha has built a strong reputation for itself over their years and their Janome series is of the most sought-after sewing machines for home use and here’s why.
- Automatic zig-zag sewing machine with free arm for circular stitch ,In-built motor; built-in needle threader and light with switch ; Button Hole Sewing: Four Step ; Thread Tension Control: Manual
- Drop feed for embroidery; triple strength stitch, Auto tripping bobbin system; Sewing speed: 860 SPM; dial type stitch selector, the brand has stopped giving demo DVD along with the product. The demo video is provided in the image section
- 13 built-in stitches including button holing; 21 stitch functions (applications) including stretch stitching, button fixing, rolled hemming, smocking, blind stitch hemming and zip fixing
The Janome Wonder Stitch comes with a total of 13 stitches and 21-stitch applications to bring out the creative beast in you (zigzag stitch, decorated stitch or a straight stitch, you can create them all).
These applications range from creating holes and fixing buttons, rolled hemming, smocking, blind stitch hemming and fixing zipper, all of which barely take a minute.
The patterns or functions can be set using the selector dial, the length dial helps you set the length of the stitch and the tension slider adjusts the tightness the thread is held with to prevent puckering or loops.
But if you are tired of the old straight lines, the free arm also allows for easy and quick circular stitching so you can further create even more unique designs.
And when you want to get the perfect embroidery or a triple strength stitch, the drop feed is just the kind of feature you need (because nothing makes your Kurta more attractive than jaw-dropping embroidery)
Also, have you ever felt the frustration of not being able to get the thread through the needle eye? Not anymore as the in-built threader makes make it a breeze.
For controlling the stitching speed Usha provides a pressure sensitive foot pedal so whether you need it fast or slow, you are fully in charge of it.
Even reverse stitching is easy peasy with the Janome. All you need to do is hold down the lever on the right and the machine will remove any stitch quickly (helpful if you ever change your mind about the design).
Lastly, the pop-up thread holder lets you know exactly when you need to replace it. And auto-trip bobbin system and easy winding further make the setup effortless, especially for newbies.
This machine, just like the Brother FS101, is quite compact and weighs about 7kgs so you should have no trouble moving it around and storing it in cupboards or even under the sofa.
And if you need to carry it from room to room or elsewhere, the handle makes the task really easy and neatly fold down when not in use.
The Janome also provides you a light which works like a charm in low light so you can continue your hobby or work even into the wee hours.
An instruction manual and demo DVD give all the details related to accessories and settings for various stitches (so will be using the machine like a pro in a matter of days).
If you still have trouble understanding all the functions fully, get in touch with the customer care and have a person come over to give you a full demo.
Well, while the Janome has tons of benefits that make it ideal for starters or even a professional, it is clearly not as advanced as a computerized sewing machine.
That is because you need to manually set the length, width, and tension which requires a degree of knowledge in tailoring to get the perfect design.
Plus, the dials tend to get stuck and broken and will need to be replaced in a few years and the machine tends to vibrate at higher speeds.
You are not provided with a cover. Though you can buy it separately, it will cost you extra.
Alternate Product: Usha Janome Dream Stitch
If you are looking for a cheaper Janome model, the Dream stitch should serve you just right.
It is packed with most of the features of the Janome Wonder Stitch has which means you get still get the automatic winder, bobbin drop system, and the automatic needle threader.
The pattern and thread tension can all be adjusted easily with their dials where the lever allows for one-touch reverse stitching.
It is also lighter at 6.5kgs, comes with a handle and is compact enough to put away in any corner of the home
But the lower price comes at some sacrifices as well. For example, the Dream Stitch has only 7 stitches and 14 applications.
Thankfully, since that includes all the basics like straight, zigzag stitches, buttonholing and fixing, zippers, etc. it is tailor-made for household use.
Also, there is no light and you do not get any control over the stitch length and width.
You also miss out on the drop feed that would have given better embroideries and triple strength stitches.
All in all, while there are some compromises made, it is still a good buy if you are looking for a sewing machine under Rs. 10,000.
#3: GOSHALI Mini Sewing Machine (Best Sewing Machine in India Under 10,000)
If you are on a tight budget, need a sewing machine or occasional use or are strapped for storage space, the Goshali Mini Sewing Machine is the answer to your prayers.
- Very useful product
- Daily usable product
- Durable product
What we like
First and foremost, you get a sewing machine for less than Rs. 1000 but that is not all the reason to buy it.
It is so light you could even carry it across the house with one hand and so compact it will fit pretty much anywhere in the house.
Plus, unlike most cheaper sewing machine, here you also get an LED light that helps you focus better on the stitching area and will last you for years to come.
Also, you can choose between a pedal or the simple on/off button to get the stitching started but what if you do not have power and have to get an important stitch done?
In that case, you will be happy to know that sewing machine also runs on 4 AA batteries giving you hours of stitching without adding a rupee to your electricity bills.
Another standout feature is that you get 2-speed settings which gives you decent control over the stitching. ideal for stitching sleeves, buttons, etc.
Further making the stitching quick and easy is the special needle threading tool so it takes you no more than 40-45-seconds to put the thread through the needle’s eye.
Even the bobbin winding is automatic, plus, with a twist of a knob you can even control thread tension.
Oh, but you don’t have to worry about most of it initially as the machine comes pre-threaded so you can use it right out of the box without breaking a sweat.
And when you do have to worry about any of those things, the in-depth guides, manuals, and online videos will help you out step by step.
Lastly, to ensure that the stitches do not come off easily and last you long, the sewing employees a chain-locking stitch.
If you have read any of the reviews above, you’ll know that this sewing machine is quite basic and does not offer you anything more than straight stitches.
Also, it tends to make quite a bit of noise for a small chap, especially at the highest speed.
It cannot stitch thicker fabrics like denim, velvet, etc. which means it not suitable for commercial use (so do not end up stitching your jeans on it).
Lastly, you do not get any control over the stitch length or width which again limits the use of the sewing machine for general repairs.
Well, as you can see the GOSHALI Mini Sewing Machine is not the most advanced sewing machine but perfect for simple repairs on lighter materials (just what a home with kids needs).
Plus, at less than Rs 1000, it offers the best bang for your buck.
#4: Singer 82820 Sewing Machine (Best Sewing Machine Under 10,000)
If you are looking for a mid-range sewing machine for home use, the Singer Promise 1408 gives you excellent features with amazing durability. More about these features below.
- Changing presser feet in seconds
- In-built thread cutter in presser bar
- Accessory storage in extension table ; Sewing Speed: 800 SPM ; Type: Electric ; Thread Tension Adjustment: Yes
From a decorative stitch to even zigzags, blind hem or something intriguing like a scallop stitch, with 8 in-built stitches, the 82820 allows you to create designs made to impress in quick-time.
Well, creating a button can be done in 4 trouble-free steps and yet, you get a professional-grade finish (you will turn in the designated family tailor with this one 😉 ).
Once again, you have dials to adjust the pattern, thread tension, and stitch length as per the stitching needs and multiple presser feet for zips, buttonholes, etc.
And when you need to change the presser foot, the snap on technology ensures you can instantly remove and snap on the next foot (gets up and ready in a matter of seconds).
To ensure that those newly created seems to remain locked in for a long time, you will find the one-touch lever reverse stitching quite handy.
You can also adjust the needle position for when you are stitching zipper or even for easy cording and topstitching (because those stitch marks on the outside of the jeans give it a real professional finish).
Furthermore, there is a storage drawer where all the accessories can be conveniently stored so you do not lose anything.
Removing it gives you a free arm which is ideal for reaching the tight areas such as cuffs, collars, pant hems and quicker and more convenient stitching.
Bobbing winding is also automatic which saves time but while threading may not be as easy as with the FS101 or Janome, it just needs a little more practice to get it right instantly.
Lastly, the small and large spool covers help keep all kinds of threads in place and since it is placed on the top it gives you ample time to change the thread before it empties out completely.
The rock solid metal frame gives the sewing machine excellent durability as it can even handle slight bumps and falls without serious damage.
Even with the heavy-duty build, it weighs just 7kgs, is quite compact and also has a handle so storing it and moving it around should be no trouble.
Further protecting the machine from any damage is the soft dust cover but that is not the only accessory you get. Here’s a list of all the accessories provided.
Lastly, the in-built light gives you a more concentrated viewing area though it isn’t very durable and will need to be changed regularly if used often (thankfully, the process isn’t too complicated).
- All-purpose foot
- Zipper foot
- Buttonhole foot
- Button sewing foot
- Edge/quilting guide
- Pack of needles
- Large thread spool cap
- Spool pin felt
- Darning plate
- Seam ripper/lint brush
- Dust cover
As I mentioned above, the threading is not as simple as with the Janome or the FS101 computerized sewing machine so getting used to it can take time for newbies.
Also, it has limited stitches and applications which means it is not suitable for commercial use. But nonetheless, for home use, it is top-notch.
Alternate Product: Singer Promise 1408 (A Cheaper Buy)
- 8 built-in stitches - Includes 6 basic, 1 decorative and 1 automatic 4-step buttonhole. This Model has 24 stitch functions
- Automatic 4-step buttonhole - Guides you through every step to professional looking results
- Easy threading easy - Straight forward threading path saves time
The Promise 1408 is a slightly cheaper alternative to the 8280 and the only downsides this model has to its elder brother are that you cannot adjust length and width of the stitch as they are pre-set based on the patterns.
Plus, it also does not have a light source and nor can the needle position be changed as with the Singer 8280 which further limits its ability.
But if you like to stick to the Singer brand and want something on the cheap, it still is a really good sewing machine for home use.
How to Buy the Right Sewing Machine?
Are you confused about how you should go about picking a new sewing machine? Here are a few basic features to look for.
Automatic Button Holder
If you want to add a button to the clothing the automatic button holder creates the hole needed for that is one single step.
So you do not have to waste time twisting and turning the fabric nor change dials. The high-end sewing machines further make the process easy by adding the button into the hole from the provided slot.
Feed Dog Adjustment
If you find the traditional mechanism of the older sewing machines too tedious and slow then this is just the kind of feature you need as it makes doing a freestyle embroidery or darning very easy.
An important feature of any appliance whether it is a sewing machine or even mobile is its user-friendliness.
And just like in mobiles it comes down to control and responsiveness so is the case with a sewing machine beginning with the responsiveness of the foot pedal to the pressure applied.
Also, the machine should not stall or make that annoying groaning noise when sewing thicker material.
Plus, all of the buttons should be within touching distance so you can make changes without having to stop.
Lastly, the LED display should be clear and large enough so it can be read even from a distance.
It should be lightweight
If you do not intend on using the sewing machine every day, you are most likely want to store it somewhere else, right?
This is why you would want one that is lightweight and compact. Some machines come with handles on top which makes them easier to haul out of the cupboard or even carry around if need be.
How annoying is it when you try to put the thread through the eye of the needle but can’t and end wasting all your time doing it? My guess is, very?
This is where a good needle threader comes into play and makes the task as simple as it can get.
The reason an adjustable needle position is considered to be such a useful feature is that it helps you move from one design to the next without a jump stitch.
You can either position the needle left, right or center.
A sewing machine can come with multiple presser feet. If you are a beginner and want to stick to straight and zigzag stitches for now, then a Zigzag foot or an all-purpose foot would be ideal.
But if you want to take things up a notch I would suggest going with a zipper foot and buttonhole foot.
Adjustable feet are also a great option and give you greater control over the tightness a fabric is held. For professional work, this one is the obvious choice.
If you are toddlers playing around in the house, you really do not want them to be messing around near the sewing machine as it can be dangerous.
And the best way to prevent any mishap is to turn off the machine while you are away, so make sure your machine has a power switch or easy on/off.
Like good driving depends on speed control, a professional stitch also depends on how you vary the speed at which the cloth is fed through the sewing machine.
For a nice, straight stitch, you want to maintain a constant rhythm rather than a stop-start stitch full of breaks.
Whether you want the thread to be held tightly or loosely, the tension adjustment helps you get it to your liking so you get the perfect stitch each time.
Keep in mind, a thread that is held too loosely creates unwanted loops whereas a thread too tight creates wrinkles. Either way, you get a sloppy, lazy finish you want to avoid.
Gone are the days you had to thread the bobbin in. With the newer sewing machines, you get top-load bobbin where you only need to drop in the bobbin and get started.
And so you know when the thread is starting to empty out, the cover is transparent.
Types of Sewing Machines Available
Not all sewing machine are equal. Some are ideal of embroidery work whereas some are electronic and some require to sweat it out with all the pedaling. Confused?
Well, here’s all you need to know about the different sewing machine you will come across in the Indian market.
Mechanical Sewing Machines
The most basic of sewing machines, it can easily be found in most India home and thus also gets its other name as the domestic sewing machine.
And while they are the cheapest kind, the problem with them is that they are very basic and do not give you anything more than regular stitches.
Plus, it also requires a lot of human effort as one needs to press the pedal with their feet to get the machine running which may not be to everybody’s liking. Also, they cannot be moved around easily.
You can also find mini sewing machines that require manual operation and while they are more portable, they still lack the stitch quality you get with the new machines.
Electronic Sewing Machine
Talking about new, electronic sewing machines cut the tiring manual pedaling out of stitching as they run on electricity. They are also lighter and thus easier to move around and store.
But they are also come with tons of other important features as well such as a thread cutter and various stitching patterns like hemming, quilting, embroidery and reverse stitching, that help stitch pretty much anything you want.
Apart from that, zip fixing, automatic needle threading, and positioning, on/off button, adjustable stitch thread tension are a few other handy features.
Oh, and some of these even have a USB port that you will find very helpful.
It is this versatility that makes these machines ideal for both beginners and professionals. But keep in mind that all of this comes at a higher cost.
Embroidery Sewing Machines
If you are only interested in embroideries, these sewing machines are perfect.
They have been designed just for this purpose as they come with an in-built embroidery-specific foot ideal for hemming, quilting, embroidering, etc.
Also, they are compact and thus easy to store and carry but just like electronic sewing machines, these will cost you big money as well because of their advanced features.
Overlock Sewing Machine
These sewing machines are also really advanced and come with different modes of function that will make stitching really easy even for first-timers.
If you want to know how efficient your Overlock Sewing machine is don’t forget to check out the number of threads they use (the more the merrier).
Overlock Sewing machines rely on mainly 5 main stitch patterns, namely, single thread pattern, two threaded pattern, three threaded pattern, four threaded patterns, and five threaded patterns but there could be more.
This means stitching a loop is going to be hassle-free. Plus, they are quite cheap which means almost anyone and everyone can afford them.
Buying a sewing machine is no easy task. You need to find the right balance between the features you really need and the money you can pay.
And we are confident, with this guide, you will be able to find a sewing machine that perfectly combines both.
If you are still confused or have questions about a different model that you are looking to buy, shoot us your doubts in the comments section below and we will get back you quickly.
To end with, all I would say is look for a machine that is portable, comes with needle positioning and threading, ergonomic design and requires minimal effort to operate.
Till then, happy tailoring
Best Sewing Machine in India (In-Depth Reviews for 2019)
Gone are the days when stitching used to seem like a chore. You no longer have to push pedals to get the perfect stitch or embroidery. Nor do you have to w
